Disaster Recovery PlanRosa PolancoCapella UniversityNURS-FPX4060Professor Lois KonzelmanFebruary 2022
IntroductionGood morning, everyone! My name is Rosa Polanco. I would like to welcome you all tothis presentation on disaster planning. As you all know, disasters are unexpected and can lead tochaos putting patient safety at risk. Disasters are defined as an event that causes numerouscasualties in which the demands for patients’ medical needs exceed (Ghanbari et al., 2019). TheVilla Health community experienced a train explosion causing the life of 6 residents and manyinjured people. Our community was not prepared for this type of event. The hospital didn’t havean appropriate plan. Organizations responding to the event weren’t communicating with eachother adding more to the chaos. It is time to design a plan that will help us navigate through thenext inevitable disaster.ObjectivesThis plan will discuss the health risks and needs of the community, identify strategies toimprove interprofessional collaborations and communication, explain the impact health andgovernment policies have in achieving desired outcomes, and explain how a plan helps lessenhealth disparities and improve access to community services.Healthy PeopleHealthy People provides science-based objectives for improving the health of allAmericans (HP,2020). The MAP-IT model can help design and evaluate the effectiveness ofinterventions such as disaster recovery. The model consists of mobilizing collaborative partners, assessing community needs, planning to lessen health disparities, implementing the plan to reachHealthy People objectives, and tracking your community’s progress. To maintain safety this planwill be guided by the MAP-IT framework from Healthy People 2020.Improving Interprofessional Collaborations
Let’s begin with the first step on the MAP-IT framework which is mobilize. One of themajor problems in our last disaster was no one knew their tasks and were just acting withoutguidance. For a plan to be effective we need to identify the roles for partners and assignresponsibilities. An effective disaster health response needs coordinated efforts by professionalsfrom various disciplines (Glauberman et al., 2020). Our plan needs to coordinate with our firstresponders which include the fire department, the EMTs, the police and sheriff’s department. We need to work with local EMS to plan on ways to get individuals in need of urgentcare after a disaster. EMS or the police needs to communicate with the hospital to prepare themfor the traffic they’ll be receiving. Hospital personal needs to be trained on triage for care to beefficient and effective. Triage which is the process of patient prioritization helps health care
