Ethnicity and Ethnic Identity Tribalism : An outdated term that was used by Westerners to refer to groups of indigenous peoples in Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Ethnic group : is composed of individuals who generally share a sense of: – identity, – history, – language, – culture, – geographic location, – religious beliefs.

Ethnicity and Ethnic Identity Ethnic groups: their members are spread across boundaries of many different countries. – Ex. Kurds are an ethnic group that has nationalistic aspirations. – Kurds live in Turkey, Iraq, Iran, Syria, and parts of the Soviet Union. – Palestine was an ethnic group without a nation. vs. Nationalism : A state of mind in which loyalty is given to the nation to which an individual belongs. Ex. Former soviet Union countries. • Most ethnics groups do not seek to form a separate nation. – Ex. Tamils of Sri Lanka, want more autonomy within the established boundaries of their country.

Ethnicity and Ethnic Identity What is ethnicity? Ethnicity : is based on a subjective perception of group membership. What are some characteristics of ethnicity? 1. Ethnicity serves as a rallying points so members can compete for – Economic resources, – Positions in gov’t, – Positions in social and economic institutions, – Governments contracts and benefits, – Constitutional protections, – Social and religious status. 2. Ethnicity provides individuals a sense of solidarity who perceived themselves as part of an ethnic group. 3. An essential component of ethnicity of a strong sense of identity .

What is important about ethnic identity? • Identity provides a framework so people can determine their positions on various issues. • This means that prejudice or prejudgments is an important part of identity. • Identity is about having a sense of belonging to a social group. • Ethnic identities often emerge from shared experiences . • Ethnicity is used for political reasons . • Ethnicity identity is often functions to draw shard distinctions among groups to promote group solidarity . • Ethnic identity promotes discrimination (us vs. them)
