Nick Leon Psych 380 Article Summary 1 In Hudson’s study, the main focus was whether or not a specific type of group cognitive-behavioral treatment was more beneficial than a control group that represented any basic therapy, in treating childhood anxiety disorders. The study seeks to compare the control group (group support and attention [GSA]) to group cognitive behavioral treatment (CBT), using 112 randomly allocated children (ages 7-16) with anxiety disorders, to either group. The children were treated and then each received a 6-month follow up examination. The Cognitive-behavioral treatment (CBT) included a variety of components: cognitive restructuring, problem solving, social skills, relaxation, and in vivo exposure. The results of the trial relied on this follow up exam to determine which group improved more or not at all. The CBT group showed significantly more improvement in the children’s anxiety over the GSA control group, with 68.6% of children in this group showing no diagnostic criteria for an anxiety disorder at the follow up session.
