Results and Discussion: Aluminum was converted into alum. A theoretical yield of 23g alum was expected. Alum refers to a class of compounds with the general formula MM’(SO 4 ) 2 12H 2 ), where M is a monovalent cation and M’ is a trivalent cation. . In this experiment alum was specifically [KAl(SO 4 ) 2 12H 2 O]. The net reaction used in this experiment was 2 Al(s) + 2 KOH(aq) + 4 H 2 SO 2 (aq) +22 H 2 O (liq.) → 2 KAl(SO 4 ) 2 ∙ 12 H 2 O + 3 H 2 (g) Four reactions was performed during Week 1 in sequence to achieve the net reaction. 1. 1.31g of Aluminum was added to 66 mL of 1.4M KOH and heated on hot plate until H 2 gas stopped bubbling. Solution turned black and Aluminum dissolved in solution. Solution was filtered using gravity filtration. The filtrate remained clear while the filter paper held black residue. The chemrical reaction was as follows 2 Al(s) + 2 KOH(aq) + 6 H 2 O 2 K + (aq) + 2 Al(OH) 4 (aq) + 3 H
