Unknown Complex A was synthesized and purified using a Vacuum Filtration apparatus. Then a Complex A solution was created by mixing with distilled water and its wavelength of maximum absorbance in the visible spectrum was measured. The maximum absorbencies of Complexes B, C, D, and E were measured as well and compared to discover the identities of each cobalt complex. Each complex had the general form: Co(NH 3 ) 5 X y+ where X is one of the five ligands below and y is the magnitude of positive charge (+2 or +3). The five possible ligands are listed below in ascending order of crystal field splitting (Δ): Br - < Cl - < F - < H 2 O < NH 3 Complex A formed maroon/magenta colored crystals. The results of wavelength measurements over the 400-600 nm range of visible light were recorded and tabulated. Then, the change in energy resulting from the absorption were calculated using the equation
