P R I V A C Y D E F I N I T I O N Privacy can be defined as a regulation of social interaction. It is an optimization process through which one balances the amount of desired and achieved social interaction. G U I D E L I N E Create a hierarchy of spaces leading from public to secondary to personal space ultimately ending in a single room. Singles should not share walls; instead they should be separated by secondary space. R E A S O N I N G In an attempt to regulate social interaction a hierarchy of spaces should be created allowing different levels of interaction to occur in a limited space. Research showed 70% of freshman prefer a single and nearly 100% of seniors prefer a single, thus the starting point would be single rooms (Evans, DEA 150, 2/11/08). Organizing singles in a suite allows isolation inside one’s room, little social interaction in the common room, and total social interaction in the public hallways. The use of suite organization allows for a regulation of visual access and exposure increasing student’s feelings of privacy.
