Written Case Analysis 4 A judge ordered a woman to stop smoking around her 5 years old son. To determine the moral consideration of this judge, I would like to exercise Doctrine of Double Effect. In this case, the act is the woman stop smoking around the boy. The good effect is the boy gets a healthy living environment, and the bad effect is the woman has reduced freedom to smoke. First of all, the moral principle condition is met in this case. Because the act itself is to stop someone causes harm to others. It is common sense that second-hand smoke is harmful, especially to children. Second, the means-end condition is also met. Because the woman’s reduced freedom to smoke does not create a better living environment for the boy. Rather a good living environment for the boy is created by the act, which is stop smoking around the boy. Third, the right intention condition is met because the judge is
