March 20, 2008 A. The Qu’ran and the Hadith a. Was revealed through Gabriel by God b. Qu’ran, word of God exactly no error or nothing lost c. Sunna are literally the examples of the prophet i. Hadith is part of the Sunna, the most important, Hadith are the literal words of Muhammad speaking as a man, not the words of God B. The Qu’ran a. For Muslims, the Qu’ran is the complete and final revelation of God to mankind and its language is proof of its truth b. The Qu’ran is composed of 114 suras or verses i. The opening sura is recited daily, preferable in Arabic, with each of the five prayers that a believing Muslim must make daily. c. The first passage revealed to Muhammad however, is now Qu’ran 95-96 d. It isn’t chronological, they have it in order of length, b/c it is oral based e. History i. First written down under Uthman (about 20 yrs. After the Prophet’s death) ii. At this time the suras were given names and a numbering system similar to biblical texts iii.
