Module 1: Assignment- Research/ Reflection Career Map
The 3 career titles I chose are Cancer Registrar, Transcriptionist and Health Information
Technician. I have researched each and my findings are explained below.
The Cancer Registrar maintains the hospital-based registry of cancer patients and ensure that
the program follows regulatory requirements. They review patient records and extract data
from inpatient and outpatient records, death certificates, pathology and autopsy reports. They
are also present at medical staff committee meetings to relay specific data to assist the medical
staff with cancer care plans.
The required education for this career is a RHIA, RHIT or Certified Cancer Registrar (CTR)
certification. The RHIA program is a 4-year baccalaureate program, while the RHIT program is 2
years. The Certified Cancer Registrar certificate can be obtained in 1 year. The salary range is
between $23,000 and $52,000 and you can work in hospitals, pharmaceutical companies,
insurance agencies or government agencies.
