Stressors : events that lead to stress i. Make people feel overwhelmed ii. Produce opposing tendencies 1. when have 2 diff things want to do but they conflict II. stress response a. ex. you realize you forgot about a paper due tomorrow i. startle ii. fast heartbeat iii. increase in BP iv. sweaty palms b. General Adaptation Syndrome (GAS) i. Alarm : fight or flight 1. body is preparing to face threat ii. Resistance : body uses more energy iii. Exhaustion : energy is depleted 1. increase risk of illness III. Major Life Events a. Study of stressful events i. Most stressful: 1. death of family/friends 2. parents divorce 3. jail 4. serious injury 5. marriage ii. see table 18.1 on pg. 596 iii. most stress = more likely to develop a serious illness 1. shown by both correlations and experiment IV. daily hassles
