Grammar Lecture #9: The Passive Construction(Chapter 11):I.Forming the passive is easy:A.In the passive construction, the subject of an activesentence becomes the object, and the object of the activesentence becomes the subject (Look at the bottom ofChart 11-1 on page 208 for a comparison of active andpassive sentences). The passive verb construction consistsof the verb "be" and the past participle of a transitiveverb:Active sentence (Subject-Verb-Object wordorder):(Subject)(Verb)(Object)Ihitthe ball.Passive sentence:(Object as subject)(Be)(PastParticiple)(Subject as object)The ballwashitby me.B.ONLY TRANSITIVE VERBS CAN BE USED IN THEPASSIVE!!!A transitive verb is a verb that takes an object.Intransitive verbs like sleep, happen, seem, etccannot be used in the passive.II.There are three reasons to use the passive:A.Use the passive when it is not important or you don't knowwho/what the subject is:The bank was robbed last night.
