Lee 1 Richard Lee Mrs. Larson British Literature 18 January 2011 Anne’s Lack of Decision in Persuasion Many critical articles debate the reasons and importance of Anne’s decision to reject Captain Wentworth’s marriage proposal. Robert Hopkins tries to apply a “classical liberal theory” to Anne Elliot’s decision-making in his critical article of Persuasion (Hopkins 274). This theory states that “man’s nobility and the source of his moral worth” is found in his rationality and his freedom which distinguishes all men (Hopkins 274). Hopkins argues that “each individual cannot fall back on an external checklist or an authoritarian moral adviser to evade personal choice, the burden of choice henceforth is on the self and on the character” (Hopkins 274). This interpretation seems to put Anne’s decision to refuse Captain Wentworth on her own shoulders entirely. Anne’s decision seems to be completely a reflection of her character while ignoring external factors like the constraints of society. However, Anne’s decision to reject Captain Wentworth is influenced by direct, Lady Russell and Sir Walter, as well as indirect, wealth, class, youth, factors and is not a complete refection of her self and character.
