ARSC 010 Lab Sec. 2009 October 3, 2007 Formal Lab Report for Lab 4 Heat Transfer and Freezing Point Depression Process: The purpose of this lab is to understand the concepts of heat transfer and freezing point. More specifically, its purpose is to explore these topics in-depth by analyzing three major experimental processes. These three components include: analyzing the effects of an “ice- melter,” calcium chloride, on ice; studying sodium chloride’s influence on water’s freezing point; and investigating how heat transfer and insulation are related. The lab’s first exercise, the impact of calcium chloride on ice, required students to compare the melting point of an ice-bath with no additives and an ice-bath with 2-3 grams of calcium chloride. Two beakers were filled about half-way full with ice and allowed to sit for a few minutes. The initial temperatures of the ice-slushes were recorded. The logger-pro temperature recording probe was placed in the beaker with calcium chloride while an alcohol thermometer was used to measure the temperature of the beaker without the calcium chloride solute. The logger pro measured temperatures at one minute intervals while the manual thermometer was noted at approximately 5 minute intervals. The ice-bath with no additives must be examined and analyzed in order to act as a control so that the data from the test beaker [calcium chloride] can be more accurately analyzed. In the second exercise, lab groups investigated sodium chloride’s effects on water’s freezing point. A simple apparatus was set up to study this concept. There was a beaker filled with a half-water, half-ice solution. There was test tube filled with 5mL water suspended above the beaker. An alcohol thermometer measured the temperature of the beaker’s ice water and the Logger Pro probe measured the test tube’s water. The test tube was inserted into the beaker and 5 teaspoons of salt dissolved into the test tube’s water. We noted when the water in the test tube began to freeze. The goal of this experiment is to see whether the salt lowered the melting point of water enough so that the water inside the test tube would freeze. Keep in mind that the “freezing” part may not actually occur because of human error and our ability to strictly control temperatures in this lab setting. The third component of this lab gave students the freedom to design their own experiments to illustrate the concept of heat transfer. For this portion of the lab, we used an oven mitt and two beakers, each filled half-way with ice. The initial temperature of each beaker was taken; one ice-filled beaker was placed inside the oven mitt and covered completely, the other beaker was not insulated [control]. For the next 20 minutes, the temperature of each beaker’s ice was recorded. This experiment was designed to study the effects of insulation on heat transfer.
