This course aims at thedevelopment of basic competency in speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills in French. Thiscourse will also offer continued encounters with the French-speaking world through readings and video.Acquiring a new language is a process that takes time. In fact, acquiring a new language may be alifelong process for many, but it is well worth the effort. While you cannot expect to become native-like after taking just a few courses, by listening to and attempting to comprehend lots of meaningfulmessages in French; and by interacting with your classmates and instructor in French; you will go a longway in building a firm foundation to allow you to communicate effectively in the target language.Because language acquisition happens largely as a result of our efforts to comprehend spoken andwritten messages in the target language, this course is conducted in French. You may not (and you arenot expected to) understand every single word your instructor says, but you should be able to get thegeneral idea of what message your instructor is trying to communicate to you. Keep in mind thatmaking errors is a natural and necessary part of learning a new language, so please do not feel nervouswhen you make mistakes speaking in class. Because a goal in this class is to develop communicativecompetence, the language practice activities in this course will allow you to learn interestinginformation about your classmates, your instructors, and the French-speaking world in addition tohelping you learn vocabulary and grammar.
