Job/Organization Hiring Transfers Promotion The more the firms get a match of whom you are and what the companies aim is then there will be more productivity; and that’s what sophisticated companies are looking for. They look for someone who can learn about the company. Companies: Culture, Values etc. It’s important for companies to get the right person because the cost of turnover is quite a lot. Biographical Features o Age, Gender, Tenure Older workers tend to turnover less than the younger workers Satisfaction with the Job; older workers are more satisfied than younger workers if its professional work Absenteeism is more with older workers if absence is unavoidable Women tend to be absent more than men: Pregnancy, kids, cultural stereotypes Tenure- how long you’ve been on a particular job, most predictive of behavior: the greater the tenure the more productive you are, the less you turnover, the happier you are; GENDER video – where women say sorry and thank you to much Ability (firms look at this: v imp; smart people learn quicker, can pick up how to do the work quicker so companies like Microsoft and Amazon etc. hire solely on this aspect mostly) Intellectual Physical Emotional Intelligence o o Empathy

o Social skills These skills are as important as technical skills: basically getting a good match between both ability for other things such as the ones above and technical skills Cultural Values o USA Lo power distance (Believe that there shouldn’t be artificial power differences among people, and all people should have equal opportunity to be successful or do well) Hi individualism (take responsibility for own actions, have trouble working in teams sometimes) Short time orientation (Quick results) o China Hi power distance Hi collectivism Long time orientation (far more deliberate can take longer for results) Firms have started selecting more and more on your values and you should also work at a firm which has good values or you wouldn’t feel at home there. Cognitive Dissonance: When attitudes and behaviors are not consistent
