Cooperation and conflict over a variety of issues The US and Iraq Saideman’s Biases Why intervene Comparison with N Korea Why Do It So Badly The Future Saideman’s Biases: Sometimes unilateralism is necessary- sometimes if the rest of the world says don’t do it, you must act to defend yourself. To act first is not always wrong, preemption is sometimes necessary to gain an advantage. Familiarity breeds contempt: OSD was broken. (Office of the Secretary of Defence)- Rumsfeld created an environment of fear. Underlings will only say what they think their bosses want to hear. The folks who entered the war didn’t take in the full range of opinions, were told what they wanted to hear. Pre-War Position: Wrong war at the wrong time by the wrong people. Afghanistan was justified, but any invasion of Iraq would be a diversion of resources and focus from Afghanistan. The war in Afghanistan was primary. Current Position: The End of American leadership? Iraq will be seen as when the American regime ended, like the British Empire
