Signs, Codes, Culture I) Why can humans communicate? a. KE Family – entire family was unable to comm. properly- knew that language gene must be inherited i. Theory is not convincing – we still do not have an answer c. Beginning of humans speaking there has been signs i. “Everything communicates” – Jacques Tati (ie: what you wear) II) a. i. ii. iii. Signs take on value only in relation to a system of signs, that is, part of a code b. Signs – use all 5 senses to communicate i. Most communication uses just sight and sound ii. Brain recognizes word sound-image (signifier) iii. Concept that signifier conjures in mind
