Terms: Universal Communication- Idealism for everyone to understand b/w receiver and sender Concentration of Ownership- 6 companies/conglomerations, lowers diversity Conglomeration- Business that acquires companies across different mediums Synergy- product that propels another product in that company Homogenization Hypothesis- due to the lack of ownership there is a lack of diversity Content diversity- there is a lack of diversity due to lack of owners/advertisers don’t want to take risks Product placement- buying w/in program, cuts upfront costs, seen more now Buying mood- principle goal to keep viewers in for advertisements Horizontal integration- owner controls all aspects from production to distribution Vertical Integration- Process by which a company owns diff types of places to distribute media Audience ratings- % of all people who own tvs watching a particular program Share ratings- % of people watching tv tuned into a particular program Media- different technological processes that facilitate comm. b/w sender and receiver Feedback- response to sender (verbal and nonverbal) Structure- recurring patters/social norms of society (formal and informal) Agency- individuality/human action/redefines against structure
