Mid-term questions Here are four essay questions for your consideration. On Wednesday, we will select two and ask you to write responding essays in your blue book. 1) Walter Ong's essay "Orality, Literacy and Modern Media" raises the point that among "primitive" (oral) people generally language was a mode of action and not simply a countersign of thought. Different forms of communication give rise to specific forms of social action and configuration. Describe the fundamental characteristics of oral communication and its effects on culture and human cognitive abilities. Compare these to the specific characteristics and effects of literacy. Outline what Ong means by "secondary orality", and demonstrate how it relates to "primary orality" and literacy. 2) Monastic libraries in the Medieval age, as described by Umberto Eco in "The Name of the Rose" and James Burke, were more than simply repositories for books.
