Comparison Paper The Declaration of Independence was the first document written. It is the reason we celebrate Independence Day every July 4th. The Declaration was brought into effect on July 4, 1776. It was basically a statement that the United States was now separate from Great Britain and we were no longer under their rule. This was basically the birth of the America we now see even though the country itself was already formed. The Declaration of Independence stated that the thirteen states in America were now sovereign states. The main idea of this document in my opinion is that we were all created equal and should have a right to our own beliefs and not be like Great Britain in the aspect of only having one religion. I liked a statement written on a site I found some time ago. It states, speaking of the Declaration of Independence, “ It affirms that the purpose of government is to secure our God-given unalienable individual rights, and that government derives its powers from the consent of the governe d.” 1 ( - document.html ).
