The political purpose of thedoctrine was to prevent the spread of the Soviet Union’s global influence during the Cold Warera and “While the doctrine lasted less than a decade, it was the centerpiece of United Statesforeign policy from the early 1980s until the end of the Cold War in 1991” (“Reagan Doctrine”,n.d.).The historical development of the Reagan Doctrine can be traced in the past affiliationbetween the U.S. and the Soviet Union. If the U.S. administration drove a policy of suppressionagainst its Soviet counterpart, then the latter showed its utter disapproval against the policies.There was already a tension prevailing between the U.S. and the Soviet Union and the election ofRonald Reagan did fuel the fire.
