Cumulative 2 -- Meghann (2) The view that political theorists have about the most important goal in life has a profound effect on their views about (a) the role of the state, and (b) which type of state is best. Provide a discussion on the relationship between these views in the following thinkers: Augustine and Machiavelli . Discuss which view of the good life you most strongly agree with. (a) Augustine. The most important goal in life: be good/moral, show compassion towards others, worship God… but really, Augustine believes that this life does not matter; true/eternal salvation lies in Heaven. Only a select minority, however, are destined for Heaven – the majority of citizens and damned/immoral. Thus, for Augustine, the role of the state is not to involve itself in soulcraft (since the majority of people cannot be helped), but rather it is to keep a check on the damned majority. An authoritarian state, then, is the best type of state. It enables complete control/exercise of power over the citizens. Force is necessary,
