2.2 The engine on an airplane is possibly the most important aspect of it. Henri Giffard first introduced the engine to aviation on September 24, 1852 when he flew 17 miles in a cigar shaped airship. The airship was powered by a lightweight steam engine with about 3 HP. As time moved on the engine on the airplane evolved. By 1903 Samuel P. Langley discovered that steam engines were too heavy for practical use and began to explore the idea of gas powered engines. Charles M. Manly, a brilliant mechanic, created a five-cylinder engine that weighed 125 pounds and produced 53 HP. Nine days after Langley’s second failed flight attempt , Wilbur and Orville Wright made history by completing the first sustained controlled flight made by a human in a powered airplane. The engine on an airplane is by far the most important aspect of it. 2.3 Wilbur and Orville Wright are two brothers from Kill Devil Hills, North Carolina.
