Lecture 11: Religion Social and cognitive system What is the difference between religion and religions? o Religion a belief system that encompasses everything one needs to understand the world based on faith o A cultural system that provides a way of thinking and doing thing o Faith o Belief o Identity o A way of life o Spirituality o Group membership All of this is also a part of identity o A single religion is different that talking about religions as a social system What is religion ? o “Religion is the audacious attempt to conceive of the entire universe as being humanly significant” o “Viewed systematically, religion can be differentiated from other culturally constituted institutions by virtue only of its reference to superhuman beings” o “Everywhere man’s mammalian desires must be satisfied, and in the absence of competing technologies which confer reasonable confidence, religious techniques are believed to satisfy these desires”
