Jet MomentumAndrew Preisler1AbstractThe Jet Momentum experiment explores the impact force that a jet of water incurs upon a flatplate and a hemispherical cup and allows for a comparison to theoretically developed equationsusing conservation of mass and momentum. By measuring the volumetric flow rate of water usedto keep a Jet Momentum apparatus in equilibrium, it is found that the force impacted upon theplate and hemispherical cup will increase linearly with increased flow rate as well as increaseddegree of plate bend. In fact, almost twice the amount of force was exerted on the hemisphericalcup as the flat plate in this experiment. This is directly due to the geometry allowing more of theavailable momentum to be transferred into vertical motion versus redirecting it into horizontalmotion as seen on the flat plate. Jet MomentumAndrew Preisler2IntroductionThe following report is based off our first experiment entitled Jet Momentum. The purpose of theexperiment is to determine the magnitude of the force of a water jet upon a flat plate and ahemispherical cup and to compare those values with those calculated using the principle ofimpulse and momentum. The experiment was performed by the author with the assistance ofNathan Whitford, Brandon Lopez, and Elijah Rasta at the San Diego State University Fluids Labon February 11th, 2022. This experiment was completed as a requirement for the course AE 341.
