Kennedy Buriani ANTH 101 AC RR1 Essay Many, such as Clifford Geertz, may argue that social anthropology is most commonly understood through the process of analyzing as an outsider. Yet, Renato Rosaldo takes an alternative approach, suggesting that analyzing is inadequate when describing social anthropology, for personal experience is the only comprehensible method of conveying the reasoning behind certain behaviors and beliefs. Rosaldo spent many years studying the ritual of headhunting, practiced by Ilongot people, in the hope of understanding what appears to be a cruel and unreasonable reaction to loss. Seeing as decapitating another human being is unfathomable to many, with no true leads, Rosaldo eventually attempted to enter a deeper analysis on the topic proposing that the ritual acted as a trade off system, one life canceling out the loss of the other. The idea being denied, it appears as problematic, for the process of a trade off is something led by thought and balance, whereas the Ilongots base their practices strictly off
