Chapter 2 “What is Art?” I. Artist & Audience 1. Outsider art/Folk art a. Art by self-taught artists b. Little/no formal training c. Define group & works as “apart” 2. Fine Art – artwork that is meant to be experienced only on an aesthetic level 3. Applied Art – artwork that is meant to be experienced on an aesthetic level but also serves some useful, utilitarian purpose (ie. Furniture, ceramics, glassware, architecture…) II. Art & Beauty 1. Aesthetics a. Branch of philosophy that studies art 2. Pieta a. Italian for “pity” b. Standard subject to Christian art c. Mary, holding Jesus after he was taken down from the cross 3. Representational – to “present again”, the visible world in a way that is recognizable. a. Naturalistic 1. Faithful to visual experience (realistic) a. Forms revealed by light/shadow b. Bone/muscle structure b. Trompe l’oeil – French for “fool the eye” 1. So life-like, fooled into believing it’s real.
