The Search for Truth on Mt. Everest Kyle Bouffard Eng 101 Mr. Lavoie The tragic events that happened on Mt. Everest on May 10 th ,1996 are much debated in the books Into Thin Air , by Jon Krakauer and The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev and G. Weston DeWalt. Boukreev and DeWalt’s depiction of what happened on Mt. Everest leading up to the disaster of May 10 th ,1996 seems to be the more truthful of the two books. Krakauer makes points in his book when the basis and logistics of his argument just simply don’t work. Krakauer also points a lot of fingers, blaming other climbers for the events that led up to May 10 th , 1996 while Boukreev and DeWalt do no blaming at all. Boukreev and DeWalt treat everyone with the same regard and respect while Krakauer holds people like Rob Hall in very high regard while disrespecting others like Scott Fischer and other climbers on the mountain. Krakauer writes with a type of sensationalism and dramatic flare that tends to have him skew the facts and sometimes make them up, which is a terrible way of writing a truthful book.

The reason that was given was that Lopsang was told at the last minute by Fischer and Hall not to go affix lines. Krakauer argues that “If Lopsang’s assertion is correct, neither Beidleman, Groom nor Boukreev…were ever told of the altered scheme…if the plan to fix the lines has been intentionally
