ACTIVITY GUIDE 2 : METRIC SYSTEM Previously metric and apothecary systems of weights and measures were used in the health field. Currently the metric system is favored and used in this learning packet. THE METRIC SYSTEM (Liters and Grams). Basic metric units used in nursing: Liter for volume (fluids) Gram for weight (solids) Commonly used equivalents within the metric system: Volume or fluid: 1 cubic centimeter (cc) = 1 mL (approximate equivalent) 1000 milliliters (mL) = 1 liter (L) 500 milliliters (mL) = 1 pint (pt) 30 milliliters (mL) = 1 fluid (fl). ounce Weight or mass: 1000 grams = 1 kilogram 1000 milligrams = 1 gram 1000 micrograms = 1 milligram Rules for writing metric dosages or amounts: 1. Metric measurements are written in Arabic decimal numerals. Example: 250, 0.5, 1.0, 0.25 2. The unit of measure follows the dosage. Example: 1.0 Gm. 500 mg. 3. To change milligrams to grams move the decimal point three places to the left (divide by 1000). Example: 500 mg. (500.0) = 0.5 Gm. 4. To change grams to milligrams move the decimal point three places to the right (multiply by 1000).
