Exercise #10. Pg 367a.International Journal of Business and Public Administration, Journal of Education forBusiness, and Journal of the Academy of Business Educationb. International Journal of Business and Public AdministrationAbstract (summary)Using student evaluations of teaching (SET) to measure teaching effectiveness is controversial. Thisstudy explores the effects of memorizing student names on SET ratings and uses the halo effect asa theoretical foundation for the hypothesized outcome. Past research has suggested that tactics thatconnote flattery facilitate a halo effect, which increases one's desire to reciprocate. An experimentaldesign was utilized to test the hypothesis. The results indicate that the memorization of studentnames does create a halo effect that positively affects SET ratings across the entire range ofevaluation questions. The implications of these findings for promotion and tenure are subsequentlydiscussed.
