Unformatted text preview: 1 March 3, 2008 Physics 132-Winter 2008 Prof. Jim Beatty-Ohio State 1 Physics 132 Introductory Physics: Electricity and Magnetism Winter Quarter 2008 Lecture 24 March 3, 2008 Physics 132-Winter 2008 Prof. Jim Beatty-Ohio State 2 What Youll Learn in Physics 132 Electric charges create electric fields. Electric fields create forces on charges. Moving electric charges (currents) create magnetic fields. Magnetic fields create forces on moving electric charges. Changing magnetic fields create electric fields. Changing electric fields create magnetic fields. 2 March 3, 2008 Physics 132-Winter 2008 Prof. Jim Beatty-Ohio State 3 Magnetic Flux We formulated the concept of electric flux and used it in Gauss Law. E = E d A We can also define a corresponding quantity for the magnetic field: B = B d A B d A = The law for magnetic flux corresponding to Gauss Law differs since there are no magnetic charges (monopoles): Unit of magnetic flux is the Weber. 1 weber = 1 Wb = 1 T m 2 March 3, 2008 Physics 132-Winter 2008 Prof. Jim Beatty-Ohio State 4 Faradays Law Consider a conducting loop in a region with a changing magnetic field. Faradays Law: The magnitude of the EMF E induced in a conducting loop is equal to the rate at which the magnetic flux B through the loop changes with time. E = d B dt 3 March 3, 2008 Physics 132-Winter 2008 Prof. Jim Beatty-Ohio State 5 How We Make the Flux Change Doesnt Matter E = N d B dt We can make the flux change in many ways: 1) Changing the magnitude of B within the coil by moving a magnet or the coil. 2) Changing the magnitude of B within the coil by changing the current in another coil that creates the field....
