William Godwin -Extreme Individualism, but not “dog eat dog” individualism. Men of Good will pursuing justice can sit down and reason with each other. They do not need to be coerced. -Even the agreement of orchestra members to follow the baton of the leader is wrong. Each deciding his own course may produce a greater harmony. Opposed marriage b/c it was a contract and bound people. On Government - Once people are enlightened the free decisions of each person will not lead to conflict -There is a universal norm or morality that all right thinking enlightened people will see. In other words they will all come to the same conclusions about what is right. This will end war & strife. -Gov’t which is just a device to restrain the voices of a few will disappear once everybody is enlightened and start behaving morally. -Although gov’t may be a necessary evil in the meantime (I.e. until everybody becomes enlightened.) its not very good even now and often produces more evil than it prevents.
