Abstract A group of students went to the Indian River Lagoon and seined the water at three depths at three different times of the day. The three depths were knee deep, waist deep, and knee deep. The times were not constant, but each seine occurred about two hours apart from each other. Fourteen different species were found in all. The three most abundant were the Mojarra, Red Drum, and Southern Puffer. The biodiversity overall was low, but the data cannot be valid cause of the small sample size. If a larger sample was collected, then the data would be more accurate. Introduction Biodiversity is defined as “the variety of all forms of life, from genes to species, through to the broad scale of ecosystems.” (Shenker). Biodiversity includes genetic variation within species, the variety of species in an area, and the variety of habitat types within a landscape. But biodiversity basically refers to the variety of living organisms in a certain area. The Indian River Lagoon is North America’s most diverse estuary (Clout). It serves as a spawning and nursery ground for many different species of oceanic and lagoon fish and shellfish. The lagoon also has one of the most diverse bird populations. Most of the nation’s manatee population lives in the Indian River Lagoon or migrates through the Lagoon seasonally (Animal). In addition, its ocean beaches provide one of the largest sea turtle nesting areas found in the Western Hemisphere (Angermeier). The Indian River Lagoon was the perfect place for this experiment to be conducted. The different types of fish and other species collected here included Mojarra, Southern Puffer, Red Drum, Gulf Pipefish, Dwarf Seahorse, Silver Perch, as well as several other species. Similar biodiversity studies have been conducted all over the world trying to determine if the

biodiversity is high or low and from that data, to hypothesize on how biodiversity affects the environment (Lawrence). The results of biodiversity experiment conducted in the Indian River Lagoon could be affected by the temperature of the water, the depth of the water where the species were collected, the season when the experiment was conducted, and the substrate. This experiment was conducted to find out if the biodiversity of the Indian River Lagoon was high or low and to determine how this affects the surrounding environment. The Indian River Lagoon was the perfect place for this experiment because of all of the species of fish that are there. Does biodiversity differ at different depths? Yes, biodiversity should be different at each depth that it is taken. Does biodiversity during different seasons differ? Yes, due to the different temperatures of each season, it will affect the biodiversity. How do season, depth, and biodiversity relate to each other? Depending on what season it is, it affects the temperature of the water; also it will affect the tides which will affect the amount and types of fish found in the Indian River Lagoon. Methods
