Raw Materials for Ceramics, Refractories and Glasses 603then sent into huge thickening tanks owing to the extremely slow precipitation kinetics. The aluminahydrate slowly precipitates from tank to tank as the temperature goes down. The floating suspensionis recuperated in the last thickening tank. Fine particles of aluminum hydrate are usually added toseed the precipitation process of pure alumina particles as the liquor cools. In fact,90%of the wetaluminum trihydrate recovered after filtration is recycled and used as a crystallization seed. Theliquor is then filtered so as to separate the wet hydrate from the liquor. This liquid is then sent to thebauxite digestion tank, where it will be enriched in soda and in lime. The particles of aluminumhydroxide crystals sink to the bottom of the tank, are removed, and are then vacuum dewatered. Thealumina trihydrate(ATH)orgibbsite[A1(OH)J obtained can be commercialized as is or it can becalcined into various grades of alumina (A12O3).
