Another World is PossibleColonial Capitalism and the Invention of Race-Racial oppression in Anglo- America started as strategy for capitalist control of labouring class-This claim is often met with disbelief -One reason is that various forms of prejudice towards outsiders and foreigner existed through many human societies over time -Hostility towards others who are different (heterophobia) has to be distinguished from modern racism, which is hostilities involving colour prejudice-what is unique to modern capitalism is idea of there are physically discount races of human with radically different characteristics and attributes-Ancient societies like Greece did not have slavery with skin colour or physical appearance, same with Islam -Islam and Christianity hatred based on religion not race, religion set of beliefs, and not inherent trait, person who converts able to lose oppressed status-Only in Modern Capitalism did persecution happened based on inherent traits that not changeable of a specific group -Jews historically persecuted for religion, only in last 200 years did we see claims of Jews being inherently, biologically different-Early stages of colonization Europeans saw Africans and Natives as barbaric, and uncivilized it became acceptable to enslave and terrorize them as long as it is done to “civilize” them-Prior to 18th century Africans were not seen as “less human”, they could be raised to level of Euro-Christian civilization-Only in 18th century did they start to favour racial inferiority-Key issue has to do with contradiction generated by capitalists on claims of “freedom”-Since inception capitalism has mobilized large groups of people to break down pre capitalist forms of power and privilege- and thereby elevate principles of capitalist property and power -For example 18th century England only able to create itself through revolution of 17th century when ability of monarchy to tax wealth and inhere with property was crushed without consent of property owners-Capitalist property had to be freed from thrown, this meant claiming ground of “liberty” in a war on tyranny, similarly claimed during french revolution 150 years later when poor mobilized against monarchy in name of “liberty, equality, and brotherhood”-Capitalism able to employ this kind of freedom and equality because “extra- economics” bases of social domination eliminated-In pre- capitalist rich can demand from others based on political status, feudal lords held noble status given by monarchy, came with perks such as right to demand land rents from peasant and so on, being exploited as peasant had to do with status of group person born in-Someone economic position not just determined on economic factors but even with “extra economic” factors such as whether one born in peasant or noble family -Capitalism hostile to this system for 2 reasons, one it kept capitalist who made money from farming, trade or industry from having influence on governments if not apart of aristocracy then excluded from circles of political power.
