THE AFFAIR OF THE NECKLACE ASSESSMENT 2 The Affair of the Necklace Assessment The movie, The Affair of the Necklace , is a Warner Brother’s production that was first released to the public, in theaters on November 30, 2001 on a wide screen format, in color. This historical, drama film written by John Sweet, and directed by Charles Shyer. The film takes place in 18 th century France with Jeanne de Valois-Saint-Remy, played by Hilary Swank, who was orphaned at an early age. She became determined to reclaim her royal title and the home that was taken from her family when she was a child. When she is rejected by Marie Antoinette, played by Joely Richardson, who causes Jeanne to fail in achieving her goal through legal channels. Jeanne then decides to join forces with the arrogant, yet socially connected gigolo Rétaux de Villette, played by Simon Baker, and her own womanizing husband Nicholas de la Motte, who was played by Adrian Brody. The three of them devise a plan to earn Jeanne enough money to purchase the property. Jeanne schemes politically and sexually to achieve her goal of regaining her family’s royal title. Other cast members included the Cardinal de Rohan played by Jonathan Pryce, Count Cagliostro, played by Christopher Walkin, The Baron de Breteuil, played by Brian Cox, and King Louis XVI, played by Simon Shackleton[Cha01]. The Movie Summary Jeanne de Saint-Remy de Valois attempts to seek legal path to regaining her royal title that was stripped from her family as a child. She is met by Marie Antoinette who orchestrates the failure of Jeanne’s attempts. Jeanne decides to take a less honest route to gain possession of her family’s home and rightful title. She teams up with her husband Nicholas and her lover Retaux de Villette. The trio devise a plan that will award Jeanne what is hers. The plan revolved around King Louis XV’s request of some jewelers to create a diamond necklace for his mistress, Madame du Barry. However, the King died before it was finished. The jewelers hoped to recover

But shad had learned the story of the necklace and refused to purchase it. This necklace became the center of Jeanne and her conspirator’s plan. Jeanne’s plan involves manipulating Cardinal Louis de Rohan by convincing him she is a confidante of the Queen, and using the knowledge that he
