LAB 8 THE INVERTEBRATES II Answers to the lab manual questions: Note the coils on the shell. What direction do the coils turn (starting at the apex)? (8-2) right Does Cantareus have an operculum? (8-2) no On which pair of tentacles are the eyes located? (8-2) superior (anterior) tentacles What type of locomotion does Cantareus use: monotaxic or ditaxic; direct waves or retrograde waves? (8-3) monotaxic; direct Why does spraying increase their activity level? Provide an evolutionary explanation to this behavior. (8-3) In order to respire, your snails require a moist surface across which they exchange gases. Increased gas exchange, allows for more oxygen which allows for more cellular respiration, which allows for more energy (ATP) production. More active snails probably are able to find food and mates at a greater rate than less active snails. Does your snail move in a particular direction relative to the light? (8-3) Cantareus seem to show no response towards light. They do not appear to move either towards or away from light. Explain the possible evolutionary advantages to its behavior. (8-3) One would predict that there is an advantage in moving away from light, perhaps to reduce desiccation or visibility to predators. However, this species of snail does not seem
