Test #2 Basis Weight Scope and Summary The purpose of this test was to analyze the quality control of paper making. More specifically, the weights of five different types of paper were recorded using a digital scale and the results were compared to the stated or nominal weights of the same stock. In doing so, the consistency in paper making was analyzed in accordance with its weight. In this test, we’ve found that coated papers were heavier than non-coated papers. Also, coated papers tended to be heavier than the nominal weight, while non-coated papers were lighter than stated. Having a consistent weight for each sheet of paper is important for printability, runability, and most of all, end-use application. The weight of paper can cause problems in a press machine if it’s not the appropriate weight. The weight is also most important in the price when purchasing large quantities of paper. Instrument Description Digital Scale: Scout Pro SP 202 Serial no. 7122161142 Specimen Description Papers Tested and M Weight Basis Weight Grammage 1.Earnscliffe Linen Bond 25x38 -122M 24lb/48M 90.31 g/m2 2.Plainfield Opaque Offset 20x30 - 88M 70lb/139M 103.70 g/m2 3.Supreme Gloss Offset 18 x 24 - 68M 75lb/150M 111.11 g/m2 4.Euroart Gloss Offset 18 x 24 - 91M 100lb/200M 148.15 g/m2 5.Newsprint 19x25 - 33M 30lb/60M 48.87 g/m2 Procedure 1. 5 different types of paper were selected, 2 of which were coated, 2 uncoated, and 1 newsprint. 2. 10 sheets were taken of each type of paper. 3. Each sheet of paper was accurately cut to 4” x 6”. 4. Using a digital scale, each 4” x 6” sample was weighed separately. 5. The results were recorded and then averaged for each type of paper. 6. For each type of paper, the average was used in the following formula to determine the actual basis weight of each sheet
