Nature of Leadership Visionary leaders: inspire others, sense of the future and the actions to take towards it - Clear vision, communicating it, inspiring, taking action 5 Principles : 1) Challenge the process 2) Show enthusiasm 3) Help others to act 4) Set the example 5) Celebrate achievements Sources of Position Power Reward power : influence through rewards - Pay raises, bonuses, promotions, compliments Coercive power : influence through punishment - Threats, penalties, termination Legitimate power : influence through authority - The right of one’s position or status - Exercising control over subordinates Sources of Personal Power Expert power : influence through special expertise - Protecting one’s credibility and not overstepping boundaries of true expertise Referent power : influence through identification - People admire you and want to identify positively : temporary compliance, must be repetitive, coercive = resentment
