Week Nine Reading Comprehension Questions "Voluntary Active Euthanasia" by Dan Brock (p. 401) 1. According to Brock, what are the two fundamental values supporting the patient’s right to decide about life-sustaining treatment? Brock argues for the principle of autonomy and for individual well-being. 2. According to Brock, why is self determination important? It is important to allow patients to make decisions about their own medical care and whether to resort to euthanasia or life sustaining treatment, and that their decision is well informed and not coerced. 3. Explain in your own words Brock’s answer to the question, “Does the value of individual self-determination extend to the time and manner of one’s death?”. Because of the changing effects conditions and medicine have on people, most want to maintain their dignity and control over the end of their life. Because of this, Brock affirms the position that people should have control over the time and manner of their death.
