1 The Colorado College Department of Economics and Business Block 5: Principles of Microeconomics Instructor: Dr. Amit Ghosh Office: Palmer Hall 101B. Class Location: Palmer 128. Email: amit.ghosh@coloradocollege.edu Lecture Time: Mon-Fri 9:15 a.m.- Noon Office Hours: Tues, Wed and Thurs 1:15- 2:30 p.m. and by prior appointment. Tel: (719) 389-6470. Course Objectives : Welcome. The objective of this course is to introduce the students with the principles of microeconomics. As the word micro suggests – it refers to analysis at the individual level, be it the consumer or the firm. This course will also introduce you to the key concepts in economics like the forces of supply, demand; a firm’s production and costs; different market structures etc. The purpose of the course is also to make you start thinking like economists. For example how is the price of a good determined? Why does the price of Pepsi or Coke always remain the same? How does a firm decide how much to produce and what price to charge? The course aims at introducing you to know how economists think and diagnose real life issues applying microeconomic theory. Think about how the theories being discussed might apply to your everyday life. So, I highly encourage you to study in groups and exchange ideas. Also active class participation is welcome. Required Textbook : N. Gregory Mankiw, Principles of Microeconomics , 4 th Edition. Thomson Southwestern. If you use the previous edition (3 rd ) of the textbook feel free to do so, but keep in mind there may be some new additions and resequencing in the 4 th edition from the previous edition. Additional hand outs will be given out in class where appropriate. Grading : The course will comprise of 4 home works, 11 short quizzes, two midterms, a final examination, a group project (a paper) and an end block group presentation. Home works are due on the mentioned dates. Late home works will lead to reduction of points. I am
