IA 401 International Perspectives Writing Assignment #2 Science Module Professor Rock Global Warming in the Arctic I. Thesis Statement Global Warming is an extremely important topic to study because global warming is one of the most threatening environmental problems and may be one of the greatest challenges facing humanity. This essay will be focusing on how the Arctic region is greatly affected by global warming. II. Introduction Since the late 1800’s the surface temperatures have increased about .6 degrees Celsius and in the last 25 years surface temperatures have increased about .4 Celsius (NCDC Website). The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) says that the global warming that we see today is unlikely to be of natural variability alone (Cunningham, 2006). Scientists have stated that human activities are contributing to global warming by adding large amounts of heat-trapping gases to the atmosphere (UCS Website). This topic is important because global warming emissions remain in the atmosphere for many years (UCS Website). Emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping gases that are emitted primarily by the burning of fossil fuels and the clearing of forests cause global warming (UCS Website). For this reason, the decisions that are made today will affect both the climate and the air quality of future generations. Scientists believe that human-caused climate change is the most important environmental issue of our time (Cunningham, 2006). Transportation accounts for almost 30 percent of the United States’
