Discuss the Impact of the Civil War on Slavery in the South The Civil War era also known as the antebellum era in the South was marked by political friction between the ‘free states’ in the industrialized North that considered slavery as morally wrong, and the ‘slave states’ in the south that supported slavery as the engine of their mainly agrarian economy. For southern whites, the civil war era was characterized by desperate attempts to continue subjugating blacks but for the slaves the period was the beginning of their long journey to freedom. Significant socio-cultural and political changes during the period include the slave codes aimed at race control, shift from unskilled slave labor in the farms to skilled industrial work, emergence of a ‘fifth column’ that undermined the war effort of Confederate army, massive escapes and finally enrollment of freed slaves into the Union army (Mitchell 34). These significant events during the antebellum era not only accelerated the end of slavery but also influenced the lives of African-American after the American Civil War (1861-1865). The first attempt by the Southern states to forestall abolition of slavery was the slave codes (1810-1860) that attempted to control every aspect of black lives.
