They were meant to maintain order. Said they would provide effective govt. . loss of credibility o Spread of other religions, ideals o Manichaeanism- from Persia. Religious idea. Got there by crossing silk road Silk- important export, china will dominate across asia to Europe. 2000 silk worms per lb. Silk road- path of goods, ideas, into and out of china. Persian ideas, Christian ideas, but most important: BUDDHISM o Christianity- appear in a form called Nestorian- heresy by standards of orthodox o Islam, on the coastal cities Neighbours - the barbarians, xiongnu- pastoral ppl, no writing, govt. o the non Chinese,, the lure of china for these people. no agricultural stuff for the steppes. o Chinese tried to civilize barbarians o As han collapse, northern xiongnu come into china. o 311, xiongnu sack the capital of Luoyang Like the sack of rome by the Germanic ppl in 410. sent ideological shockwaves through rome. World is different. But the various xiongnu cannot establish a single empire “16 kingdoms” – different dynasties. Period of confusion. “medieval” what does this mean? Is a European term. Not really any period outside of Europe. When does it begin in china? with collapse of han dynasty? Issue of naming. No meaning for anyone living at the time.
