Lesson One: Plant Diversity “Plants” refer to the living things on Earth that can do photosynthesis Algae are photosynthetic Protists Algae can be single-cells, cell colonies, and others (like seaweeds) have tissues and organs. Plants provide us with food, shelter and medicines What Are Plants? No matter the plant, they all have 2 main things in common o Cells containing chloroplasts and the ability to do photosynthesis o Alternation of Generations between haploid and diploid forms All plants have life cycles that alternate between haploid and diploid multicellular stages. Another way of putting this is o Haplodiplontic The following are both risks to living on land o Desiccation and transport to and from tissues Seedless vascular plants include the following characteristics o Evolution of xylem and phloem o Water is necessary for fertilization (sperm swims to egg) o Sporophyte generation dominating Evolutionary advantages (adaptations) of seeds o
