EASTERN ROME (BYZANTINE EMPIRE) 600-1200 AD. 7 th century: - Greek was made the official language of the empire- by Heraclius (who changed his Latin title to “Basileus”) o show the influence of the Greeks o he tried to impose greek orthodox beliefs on churches of Egypt and Syria, create enmity between Greek and Semitic Christians - invasion by Avars, Slavs, Bulgars o threaten a dark age- but the Slavs later converted to orthodox Christianity o the Byzantine sent 2 missionaries (Cyril and Methodius) to convert these people o influence on the Slavic architecture- all modeled after Byzantine buildings - Persians and Muslims o Heraclius able to resist Persian invasion, but not the Islamic ones o Defeated Persian king Chosroes and took back relic of Christ’s cross o Islamic armies continuously attacked Constantinople (not able to repel till 8 th century with Leo III) - the impact of islam o during time of Muhammad and thereafter, invading arab armies claimed the attention and resources of emperors in Constantinople. o
