Women Who Rock – Unit 3 Notes 80s Rock PAT BENATAR – born Patricia Andrzejewski in NY 1953, raised in Lyndenhurst Long Island, classic training as opera singer with mezzo-soprano voice. Fan of Judy Garland and the Beatles. In late teens, marries Dennis Benatar and moves to Virginia where he is stationed in the military. She works as Bank Teller, but returns to music instead. 1975 – moves to NY and sings at Catch a Rising Star club. Owner is impressed and becomes her manager. They change her style to more aggressive, heavy metal style. 1978 - Record deal with Crysallis, releases debut album “Heat of the Night” 79, reaching Top 20 by 1980. 2 singles reach top 30 “Heartbreaker” and “Will Live For Love” Divorces and marries her guitarist. 1980 - #2 album “Crimes of Passion” with top 20 single “Treat Me Right” and #9 million selling hit “Hit Me With Your Best Shot”. Album is 1 st of 4 consecutive Grammy winning albums. “Hit Me With Your Best”, signature song, often played at sporting events. Covered by John Cougar, Joan Jett, Alvin and Chipmunks, and Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2012 film “Rock of Ages”. 4-bar guitar bass patterns, 2 part harmony on chorus, rapid guitar technique made famous by Van Halen 1980-82 – 3 consecutive Top 5 albums and 11 Top 40 singles. 1981 – becomes 1 st winner of Grammy for Best Rock Vocal Female Performance and wins next 3 years in a row. One of 1 st women rockers to adopt hard-driving guitar-propelled Rock and Roll style. Becomes MTV staple, with impactful videos like 1984’s “Love is a Battlefield”. Wrote most of her own material. When media and her record company focused on her as a sex symbol, she cut her hair and stopped wearing tights on stage in protest. 1988 – Harmony Encyclopedia of Rock said Benatar was pandering to commercial tastes and was only successful due to her gender. 1990s – releases “True Love” album with jump blues music “Big Maybelle” and B.B. STEVIE NICKS – best known with Fleetwood Mac formed by british members of John Mayall Blues Breakers Band (Peter Green, Mick Fleetwood, and John McVie) . 1967 – group international blues festival, playing originals and covers and 1968 Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac LP is released. Popular in Uk, still unknown in US. 1970s – moved from blues to softer style after addition to McVie’s wife, Christie, on vocals and keyboards. 1971 – “Future Games” album
