2Definition of Terms:Cerumenor commonly known as earwax, is a hydrophobic protective covering in the earcanal. It acts to shield the skin of the external canal from water damage, infection,trauma, and foreign bodies. (Dinces, 2021)Purulent dischargeis a sign of infection. It’s a white, yellow, or brown fluid and might beslightly thick in texture. It’s made up of white blood cells trying to fight the infection,plus the residue from any bacteria pushed out of the wound. There may be an unpleasantsmell to the fluid, as well. (WebMD Staff, 2021)Bilateral Otitis Mediaan inflammation of the middle ear characterized by the accumulationof infected fluid in the middle ear, bulging of the eardrum, pain in the ear and, if eardrumis perforated, drainage of purulent material (pus) into the ear canal. (Stoppler, 2021)Bilateral Mastoiditis(acute and chronic) is a bacterial infection of the mastoid cells in themastoid bone, which is located just behind the ear. Mastoiditis can become serious if theinfection spreads outside the mastoid bone. (Cunha, 2020)Myringotomyis a surgical procedure of the eardrum or tympanic membrane. The procedureis performed by making a small incision with a myringotomy knife through the layers oftympanic membrane. (Reilly, 2021)Otitis mediais an infection of the middle ear that happens due to a cold, sore throat, orrespiratory infection. It is the result of the malfunction of a canal known as the eustachiantube which works by connecting the middle ear to the throat. It helps to equalize the pressureon the middle and outer ear.
