Observations versus Inferences
Observations: A statement of fact about an object
e.g. the apple is red, the car is black

Two types:
1. Qualitative Data

2. Quantitative Data

Observations should record:
1. Reactants – material at the start of the reaction
2. Products - materials at the end of the reaction
3. Reaction - what occurs during the reaction
Inferences: A summary statement at the start of the reaction made by using your
past knowledge. A description of the observation that may or may not
be true.
e.g. all sports cars drive over the speed limit

Making valid observations:
1. Don’t “fill-in” the gaps in the information given (unless absolutely sure)
2. Just because you can’t see it, it doesn’t mean it’s not true
3. Don’t let your preconceived ideas cloud you, be open minded
