POLS 207 1/29/08 Texas Constitution is one of the longest of all the states. Shows we have no faith in government. Purpose of the constitution is to affirm the rules of the game. Texas constitution has been rewritten 6 times competley and is approximately 90000 words wrong, 435 ammendments, very lengthy, detailed. First constitution written in 1836, declared independence from Mexico, not part of US yet though. Problems with Mexican gov Werent happy with church, military, federal system of government. Separated Church and State. If you are a member of the church you can not run for political office. Presidental Abuse, governor has no power. Power is divided over 6 offices, don’t need to know what they are. We wanted slavery, wrote it was illegal to free slaves. Put 3 year term limit on President, cannot be immediately reelected. Didn’t like federal system of government, we adopted a unitary system of government. Joined the US in 1845 US couldn’t foreclose on land granted women property rights
